Welcome to HotelGuide.Networks' directory of hotels and hotel reviews for Omaha, Nebraska!
Experiencing dynamic growth, Omaha has poured in billions to transform downtown into a midwest riverfront oasis with a revitalized historic district. Add to that a world class zoo, a modern convention facility, performing arts venues, and more. From founding in 1854, Omaha -- situated alongside western banks of the Missouri River and spurred onward by railroad and meatpacking industries -- has continually transformed, adapting to the times for its riverfront core. Native Indian tribes first called the area home, joined by westward-pushing pioneers, followed by railmen and meatpackers. Growth invariably pressed outward from Nebraska’s eastern shore on the "Mighty Mo." In the latest spurt of downtown / riverfront construction, Omaha has unveiled a $291-million convention center, Qwest Center Omaha, the new 40-story First National Bank Building (for one of Omaha's five Fortune 500 companies), and a riverfront university campus for the world-renowned Gallup Organization. A National Park Service Regional headquarters building, new headquarters for Union Pacific, and a $90-million Performing Arts Center are also part of the renaissance.
Waterfront apartment / condo development rises alongside the Miller Park landing for the sternwheeler, River City Star, and dining with outdoor seating overlooks the river. Also planned: A $25-million pedestrian bridge connecting Omaha and its neighbor, Council Bluffs, Iowa. Omaha attractions include downtown’s Durham Western Heritage Museum, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, midtown’s Fun Plex, and El Museo Latino. Heartland of America Park & Fountain is downtown at 8th and Douglas streets where Heartland Gondolas, Inc. provides Venetian-style water fun. The Gerald R. Ford Birth Site & Garden is at 32nd & Woolworth Avenue. West of town is the Freemont Dinner Train and the Fremont & Elkhorn Valley Railroad / Nebraska Rail Museum. Omaha hosts a dynamic shopping environment including Borsheim’s, America’s second largest jewelry store, and the Nebraska Furniture Market spreading out over 78 acres. Old Market houses more than 100 eclectic shops, galleries, pubs, coffee houses and restaurants. Suburban shopping destinations include Village Point.
Golf is big in Omaha, with more than 36 public courses from nine-to 27-holes. Holland Performing Arts Center is the new home to the Omaha Symphony. The Omaha Community Playhouse is the nation’s largest community theatre, and the city also has smaller experimental theaters. Renowned for juicy, thick-cut steaks and burgers, Omaha also has plenty of ethnic dining diversity, from Greek, Mexican, and Italian to Irish, Thai, Japanese and more. Nightlife also has zing, with the 17,000-seat Qwest Center Arena booking world-class artists. For ease in getting around town, Omaha streets are divided into North and South by Dodge Street (West Dodge Road), and East and West by 72nd Street. Where Dodge and 72nd Street meet is considered the "Crossroads." Greater Omaha lodging includes more than 10,000 rooms from bed and breakfasts to name brand hotels.
